Strong Up / Down Trend is based on altFINS’ own rating system for trends.  Its calculation is based on price and SMA crossovers.  A “Strong” trend rating indicates that the Up / Down trend is Strong across all three: Short, Medium, and Long Term Trends.

Moving Average (MA) cross-overs are powerful signals for assessing price trends.  There two types of crosses: MA cross and Price/MA cross.  This applies to both, Simple and Exponential Moving Averages (SMA and EMA).

MA cross occurs when a short-term MA crosses the long-term MA, either above (bullish, uptrend) or below (bearish, downtrend).  altFINS allows you to compare MAs.  For instance, you can find coins where 5-day SMA has crossed the 10-day SMA.  You can also indicate by how much (%) is the 5-day SMA above or below the 10-day SMA. You can also combine multiple MA crosses (5/10, 5/20, 5/30, or 5/10, 10/20, 20/30, etc.) to strengthen the signal power of your screen.

Price/MA cross occurs when the price crosses an MA, either above (bullish) or below (bearish).  Since Price moves faster than a moving average (SMA, EMA), this type of cross typically occurs before an MA cross (like 5/10 days).  Hence, Price/MA cross is more sensitive and provides earlier indications but can also give more false readings for trend developments.
