The UK government's request, as reported by the Financial Times, specifically mandates Apple to grant access to encrypted iCloud backups belonging to British users. While previous demands aimed for broader access, this current focus on UK accounts does not alleviate concerns. Cybersecurity experts highlight that many popular mobile cryptocurrency wallets, including Coinbase Wallet, MetaMask, and Uniswap Wallet, utilize iCloud to store encrypted backups of users' private keys. Should a backdoor be implemented, even encrypted files become susceptible to "dictionary" or "brute-force" attacks, where attackers systematically attempt to decrypt the data, potentially exposing users to financial loss. Privacy advocates, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), vehemently condemn these governmental demands.
