The RLUSD Supply Paradox: Stability Amid a 29% Contraction

Recent data from the XRP Ledger (XRPL) reveals a significant and sudden 28.7% drop in the reported supply of Ripple’s dollar-pegged stablecoin, RLUSD. Between October 29 and October 31, the total token count on the ledger fell to approximately 707 million. However, despite this massive contraction in total supply, the actual liquidity available to traders in major XRP/RLUSD pools remained remarkably stable. This divergence suggests that while the ledger's total obligations decreased, the functional market depth for XRP holders remained largely unaffected.

Liquidity Pools Defy the Supply Drop

The most striking aspect of this supply shift is the resilience of the automated market maker (AMM) reserves. While the overall RLUSD supply plummeted, a sampled XRP/RLUSD trading pool saw its XRP balance slip by less than 1%, while its RLUSD balance actually experienced a slight increase of 0.36%. This is a critical distinction for traders: the total ledger supply often includes tokens sitting idle in institutional or operational wallets, whereas the pool reserves dictate the "slippage" and efficiency of actual trades. Because the pool inventory held steady at roughly 1.87 million XRP and 2.34 million RLUSD, the execution quality for users remained consistent despite the vanishing tokens elsewhere on the chain.

Order Book Shifts and Trade Execution

Beyond the automated pools, the order books presented a more nuanced picture of market sentiment. The capacity for traders to sell XRP into RLUSD actually improved during this period, with funded "asks" rising from approximately 62,952 RLUSD to over 112,162 RLUSD. Conversely, the capacity to sell RLUSD to acquire XRP saw a decline, dropping from earlier highs before staging a partial recovery. A snapshot taken on October 31 confirmed that a 10,000-RLUSD order could still be filled in either direction with minimal deviation from the mid-market price. This indicates that the supply reduction did not result in a liquidity crunch for average-sized transactions.

Unresolved Mysteries of the Supply Decline

The exact cause of the RLUSD supply contraction remains a subject of debate, as tracking "mint and burn" cycles on the XRPL can be complex. While XRPL supply fell, Ethereum-based RLUSD supply reportedly rose by 5.73% to 1.71 billion, suggesting a potential migration of funds across chains rather than a straight redemption. Furthermore, because the XRPL records supply as a change in ledger obligations, a reduction could stem from inventory consolidation or tokens being returned to the issuer. Until more transparent, real-time reconciliation is available, the primary takeaway for holders is that the health of the trading ecosystem is currently independent of the headline supply figures.
