DekaBank Brings Cryptocurrency Trading to Germany’s Savings Banks

DekaBank, the primary securities provider for Germany’s Sparkassen savings banks, has officially launched its new "Krypto – powered by Deka" service. This integration allows adult customers at participating regional banks to trade major digital assets directly through their existing Sparkasse mobile application. By bridging traditional finance with the digital economy, the service provides a regulated pathway for retail investors to explore the crypto market.

Seamless Integration and Asset Variety

The rollout began on October 19, enabling users to open a dedicated Deka crypto account within the app’s investing section. Initially, the platform supports trading for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, and Polygon’s POL. While each individual Sparkasse decides independently whether to offer the service, early participants include Frankfurter Sparkasse, Sparkasse Karlsruhe, and Sparkasse Rottal-Inn. Deka plans to continue this rollout in stages over the coming months to reach a broader segment of the German banking public.

Pricing Structure and Trading Limits

Deka has implemented a competitive retail pricing model, charging a flat fee of €0.99 per purchase or sale. While there is no minimum order size, the bank has set a maximum transaction limit of €250,000 to manage risk. Investors should note that the total cost includes an additional market spread, the exact rate of which is not disclosed in the standard pricing sheet. The bank also advises that technical maintenance or system faults could occasionally impact the timing and execution of trades.

Custody and Transfer Restrictions

Under this model, DekaBank manages the technical complexities by holding private keys on behalf of its customers in a central omnibus wallet. For security and regulatory reasons, outbound transfers are strictly limited to a "whitelist" of approved crypto-asset service providers. Current approved providers include Crypto Finance (Deutschland) GmbH and Börse Stuttgart Digital Custody, among others. Crucially, the service does not currently support direct transfers to private self-custody wallets, and the assets are not covered by statutory bank-deposit protection.
