Bitcoin ETFs Rebound as BlackRock Drives Massive Inflows

US spot Bitcoin ETFs witnessed a significant reversal on October 19, securing over $526 million in net inflows to break a cycle of recent withdrawals. This resurgence was primarily fueled by institutional giant BlackRock, whose iShares Bitcoin Trust alone drew in more than $665 million. The surge in investment coincides with a broader price recovery for the flagship cryptocurrency, signaling a shift in sentiment despite ongoing economic uncertainty.

BlackRock Dominates the Market Recovery

The recent influx of capital into Bitcoin ETFs marks a pivotal moment, more than doubling the total amount withdrawn during the previous week’s slump. While competitors like Fidelity and Grayscale experienced modest outflows, BlackRock’s IBIT dominated the market, accounting for approximately 126% of the net purchases in a single session. This concentration of demand highlights BlackRock's role as the primary engine for institutional Bitcoin exposure. The renewed interest helped push cumulative investment in these products to $57.40 billion, representing over 6% of Bitcoin’s total market capitalization.

Volatility Amid Macroeconomic Uncertainty

Despite the strong performance on Monday, the road to recovery has been marked by significant volatility and alternating flows. Investors have struggled to maintain sustained positions as stronger-than-expected US inflation data recently fueled fears of further Federal Reserve interest rate hikes. This macroeconomic backdrop resulted in nearly $907 million in combined withdrawals over the preceding two weeks. The current rebound suggests that while price sensitivity remains high, institutional appetite for Bitcoin persists as investors reassess their positions in a shifting financial landscape.

The Stark Contrast Between Bitcoin and Ethereum

The optimism surrounding Bitcoin stands in sharp contrast to the struggling US spot Ethereum ETFs, which faced another $103.3 million in losses during the same period. Even BlackRock’s Ethereum product, ETHA, saw significant outflows, illustrating a rare divergence between the asset manager’s two major cryptocurrency offerings. Ethereum funds have now faced a prolonged withdrawal streak, erasing more than $1.1 billion in value over the last 15 trading sessions. This performance gap, totaling roughly $630 million in a single day, underscores a growing preference among investors for Bitcoin as the preferred digital asset for ETF exposure.
