Establishing a Hard Ceiling for Ethereum Proving Costs
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is advocating for a critical evolution in the network’s infrastructure: a hard ceiling on the costs associated with generating zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs. As Ethereum pushes toward faster proof generation and higher execution capacity, Buterin emphasizes the need for a formal resource-accounting system. This system aims to ensure that proving burdens remain predictable and manageable for independent operators, even when processing the most complex and demanding blocks.
The Gap Between Execution and Proving Resources
The current challenge for independent prover operators lies in the unpredictability of "worst-case" workloads. While standard blocks may be processed quickly, certain operations—such as cryptographic precompiles or modular arithmetic—are significantly more "expensive" to prove than they are to execute on a standard CPU. Recent progress by ZKsync’s Airbender team has demonstrated that high-end GPUs can prove the vast majority of mainnet blocks in under 12 seconds. However, Buterin argues that a true performance guarantee must cover every permitted workload, including blocks deliberately designed to be computationally taxing, to allow operators to budget hardware accurately without needing excessive reserve capacity.
Engineering a Reliable Resource Bound
To bridge the gap between execution gas and proving work, several technical and economic strategies are being explored. One approach involves "ZK-gas" metering, which would apply a separate allowance for operations that are heavy on proof generation, potentially constraining a block before its standard execution gas is exhausted. Other proposals, such as multidimensional fee markets under EIP-7999 or opcode repricing, seek to align user costs with the actual proving resources consumed. The ultimate goal of these initiatives is to establish a specified performance envelope that links Ethereum’s gas schedule to a dependable limit on the hardware and time required to secure the network.
