Firelight, the DeFi cover protocol on the Flare network, has officially transitioned into its active coverage phase, fundamentally changing the role of XRP-linked collateral. As of October 6, existing stakers of Flare’s XRP (FXRP) have been automatically moved from a bootstrapping phase into a risk-bearing position, where their capital now serves as the primary backstop for potential losses in protected vaults. This evolution transforms FXRP from a passive asset into a fee-earning instrument, albeit one with significantly higher obligations and longer liquidity exit horizons.

The New Utility of FXRP: Earning Through Risk

With the launch of its first live cover integrations—specifically Sentora’s USD Protected and Protected RWA Vaults—Firelight has begun allocating millions in coverage. Stakers now supply the capital required to cover losses, earning premiums in exchange for taking on pooled slashing exposure. Early data indicates that approximately $38 million in cover has already been allocated, generating tens of thousands of dollars in premiums for the protocol's contributors. This model relies on a loss waterfall where a protocol-owned stablecoin buffer absorbs initial hits, but any remaining claims are distributed pro rata among stakers, making the safety of the vault directly dependent on the aggregate claims experience.

Navigating the Withdrawal Queue and Exposure

One of the most critical shifts for participants is the introduction of a structured 30-to-60-day withdrawal period. When a user chooses to unstake their stXRP, they immediately stop accruing new rewards, yet their underlying FXRP remains "in the queue" and exposed to potential claims throughout a reconciliation period. This ensures that incidents occurring during a staker's active period can still be settled using their capital, even after they have initiated an exit. As the protocol manages nearly $70 million in Total Value Locked, the long-term value for holders will depend on whether these premium-based returns can sufficiently compensate for the market volatility of XRP and the extended illiquidity of the staking process.
