Bitcoin Under Pressure as Hot Inflation Data Fuels Rate Hike Fears
Bitcoin is facing renewed selling pressure as September’s US inflation data came in higher than anticipated, sparking concerns of further monetary tightening. With consumer prices exceeding forecasts, market expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike in October have surged, driving up Treasury yields and strengthening the US dollar. This shift in the macroeconomic landscape has created a significant headwind for the cryptocurrency market, as investors pivot toward interest-bearing traditional assets.
Inflation Surprises and Shifting Fed Odds
The latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that headline inflation reached 3.7% in September, surpassing the 3.6% forecast. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, also climbed to 2.6%, driven largely by rising shelter costs and a 9.1% spike in gasoline prices. These stubborn figures have fundamentally altered market expectations; the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October jumped to approximately 47%, a sharp increase from the 20% odds priced in prior to the announcement.
Rising Yields Challenge Bitcoin’s Appeal
The immediate reaction to the inflation data was felt across the financial markets, with the two-year Treasury yield climbing to 4.872%. For Bitcoin, which offers no yield, higher interest rates on dollar-denominated assets represent a direct form of competition. This environment has triggered a cooling effect on the digital asset's price action, with Bitcoin dropping roughly 2% in the 24 hours following the release. As the dollar gains strength against a basket of currencies, the risk remains that continued volatility and elevated yields will keep downward pressure on Bitcoin leading up to the Fed's next policy meeting on October 27-28.
