SWI Group Secures €800 Million to Pivot from Bitcoin Mining to AI Infrastructure
SWI Group is making a massive play in the artificial intelligence sector, securing €800 million in new capital to transform its digital infrastructure. By repurposing assets once linked to the defunct FTX exchange, the company aims to capitalize on the soaring demand for high-performance computing across Europe and the United States.
From Crypto Mining to AI Powerhouses
The cornerstone of this expansion is the integration of Genesis Digital Assets (GDA), a former Bitcoin mining giant once backed by Alameda Research. After consolidating a majority stake of over 70%, SWI is rebranding the entity as SWI Digital to align with its new focus. This strategic shift leverages GDA’s existing power-connected sites, providing the physical foundation necessary for high-performance computing (HPC) and enterprise-level AI services. With a combined portfolio exceeding 4 gigawatts of power capacity, SWI is positioning itself as a dominant force in the global data center landscape.
The Economic Logic of the AI Pivot
The move is driven by a stark difference in profitability between traditional cryptocurrency mining and AI infrastructure. Industry data suggests that AI computing can generate approximately $1.5 million in annualized profit per megawatt, nearly triple the $500,000 typically earned from Bitcoin mining. While the conversion process is significantly more capital-intensive—costing up to $15 million per megawatt compared to $1 million for mining—the potential for higher market valuations and long-term enterprise contracts has drawn massive institutional support. SWI intends to use this momentum to develop its own AI cloud platform, moving beyond mere data center ownership to provide direct computing services for developers and corporations.
