The Launch of Open USD: High Supply, Limited Circulation

Recent data from Crystal Intelligence reveals that while Open USD (OUSD) entered the market with a significant supply of $666.3 million, the majority of these tokens remain concentrated within launch and custody wallets. Launched on September 30 across platforms like Solana, Ethereum, and Tempo, the stablecoin is backed by industry giants including Coinbase, Visa, and Mastercard. However, the first week of activity suggests that the token is currently in a staging phase rather than seeing widespread public adoption.

Concentrated Distribution and Custody

The study indicates that a staggering 74% of the total OUSD supply is held by just ten wallets, with the Tempo network hosting 71% of the total volume. Approximately $396 million sits in wallets funded directly by Bridge that have yet to move, while another $200 million is held in Coinbase custody across four different blockchains. Because these funds remain stationary in founder-controlled or partner-related accounts, it is difficult to determine the actual number of beneficial owners or off-chain usage. This concentration highlights that the initial launch was more about inventory placement than immediate market penetration.

Trading Volume and Network Dynamics

Despite the large outstanding supply, decentralized exchange (DEX) trading volume for OUSD totaled only $4.1 million during its inaugural week, with Solana accounting for the bulk of that activity. Interestingly, while the network recorded over 11,500 transfers, the vast majority were identified as micro-payments for network fees rather than substantial value movement. Specifically, over 70% of transfers on the Tempo chain were fee payments totaling just over three dollars, which can create a misleading impression of high transaction activity. Moving forward, the success of Open USD will be measured by its ability to transition from these staged wallets into active circulation through organic minting and commercial use.
