Precision Control: Base Announces the Cobalt Upgrade for B20 Tokens
The Base network is preparing for its "Cobalt" upgrade, scheduled for mainnet deployment on September 30 at 18:00 UTC. This update introduces a sophisticated evolution to the B20 token standard, allowing issuers to manage administrative seizures independently of standard transfer restrictions. By decoupling these functionalities, Base offers a more flexible and robust framework for both asset and stablecoin variants on the network.
The Mechanics of Administrative Seizure
At the heart of the Cobalt upgrade is the introduction of a new administrative operation called seizeWithMemo.
This function allows authorized issuers to move a specific amount of tokens from a holder to another address while preserving the total supply and bypassing ordinary transfer policies.
Crucially, the upgrade separates seizure permissions from transfer permissions; a holder might remain free to conduct day-to-day transactions while still being eligible for administrative reassignment.
To ensure security, the process requires specific configurations, including the SEIZE_ROLE for the administrator and the adjustment of the SEIZE_EXEMPT_POLICY, which protects accounts unless otherwise specified.
Advanced Governance and Deprecation of Old Standards
Cobalt refines how issuers handle blocked balances by providing distinct pathways for seizure and burning.
While the previous burnBlocked function allowed administrators to destroy tokens held by restricted accounts, it is now being deprecated in favor of more nuanced controls.
Issuers can now choose to keep tokens in circulation by reassigning them to a new address or proceed with a subsequent burn if necessary.
These operations are governed by separate administrative roles and pause controls, ensuring that token rules can be updated without interfering with the underlying liquidity or user experience of the broader ecosystem.
Implementation and Network Readiness
The transition to Cobalt has already been tested on the Sepolia testnet and is now moving toward its final mainnet launch. Node operators are required to upgrade to version 1.4.2 to support the new features and ensure network stability during the two-hour maintenance window. As Base continues to mature, these administrative tools provide the necessary infrastructure for institutional-grade assets and stablecoins that require high levels of compliance and precision management.
