Petrobras Leverages Cardano to Secure Renewable Fuel Tracking

Petrobras, Brazil’s state-controlled energy giant, has partnered with the Cardano Foundation and PUC-Rio University to explore blockchain solutions for environmental accountability. By utilizing the Cardano network, the collaboration aims to provide a transparent system for tracking sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. This initiative ensures that carbon reduction claims are verifiable, traceable, and secure from duplication.

Blockchain-Powered Solutions for Aviation

The initiative centers on a "Book-and-Claim" model for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This model allows the environmental benefits of the fuel to be decoupled from the physical product itself, enabling users to claim credits even if the fuel is produced elsewhere. Through the use of standardized CS-SAF tokens on the Cardano blockchain, these attributes can be created, transferred, and retired. This digital ledger prevents the "double-counting" of benefits—a challenge similar to double-spending in cryptocurrency. Once an environmental claim is retired on the blockchain, the system ensures it cannot be claimed again by any other party. These tokens are aligned with international CORSIA standards, providing travelers with digital certificates that detail their specific route, distance, and carbon allocation.

Extending Traceability Across the Supply Chain

Beyond aviation, the collaboration includes the Diesel R project, which focuses on Petrobras’ renewable fuel brand. This project proposes a series of checkpoints across production, transportation, and use to create a continuous fuel-lifecycle record. Such a system is specifically designed to support Scope 3 reporting, which tracks indirect emissions across a company's wider value chain. By connecting information held by various suppliers and logistics providers, the Cardano-based architecture offers a highly traceable supply-chain history. This research and development work illustrates how blockchain can record the allocation and retirement of environmental benefits with high integrity and transparency.
