Coinbase Secures CFTC Approval to Complete Vertically Integrated Trading Stack
Coinbase has reached a significant regulatory milestone by securing approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to operate its own derivatives clearinghouse. This development allows the firm to complete a vertically integrated trading stack within the United States, positioning it as a primary end-to-end infrastructure provider for regulated financial products.
Achieving Full Control Through Vertical Integration
By registering Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization, the company now controls all three essential layers of the regulated U.S. derivatives market. Coinbase now operates as a futures commission merchant, a designated contract market, and a registered clearinghouse. This internal infrastructure eliminates the need for third-party clearing partners, significantly shortening product development cycles and granting the exchange greater flexibility to introduce new financial instruments. The company expects this streamlined structure to support more efficient operations while bringing regulated crypto products to market with increased speed.
Optimized Infrastructure for Always-On Markets
The new clearinghouse is specifically designed to handle the demands of the 24/7 digital asset economy. By utilizing USDC as collateral and offering 24-hour settlement cycles, Coinbase is pitching a more modern alternative to traditional financial systems that rely on restricted trading hours and legacy settlement processes. Initially, the clearinghouse will focus on fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps, providing a secure environment for traders who require high-frequency settlement and transparent collateral management.
The Road Ahead for Equity-Linked Derivatives
While the clearinghouse approval is a major victory, some of Coinbase’s more ambitious products remain in the regulatory pipeline. The firm is currently awaiting approval for single-stock perpetual futures—cash-settled contracts tied to individual U.S. equities like Apple. Until these products receive the green light, Coinbase will continue to utilize external partners for its margined derivatives business. Once approved, these equity-linked instruments will represent a significant expansion of the company’s derivatives business, further bridging the gap between traditional stock markets and the crypto-native ecosystem.
