Institutional Momentum Cools as Bitcoin ETFs Hit a Speed Bump

Despite maintaining an eight-day streak of positive inflows, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a significant slowdown in demand on September 28. With just $31 million in net inflows, the market is witnessing a sharp contrast to the billion-dollar surges seen earlier in the month, raising questions about the strength of institutional support as Bitcoin faces a critical resistance level.

Divergent Flows and the Year-to-Date Recovery

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust continues to anchor the market, recently adding 657 Bitcoin to push its total holdings back above the 800,000 BTC threshold. However, this individual success was largely offset by notable outflows from the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund and Grayscale’s GBTC, which lost $10.9 million and $23.19 million respectively. While the daily figures show a 97% decline from recent peaks, the broader trend remains resilient; the funds attracted a staggering $2.4 billion last week, marking the strongest weekly performance of 2026. This momentum has been instrumental in flipping year-to-date flows into positive territory, successfully erasing a $5.8 billion deficit recorded as recently as July.

The Battle at the $84,000 Supply Barrier

The deceleration in ETF demand arrives at a precarious moment for Bitcoin’s price action, which has stalled near $84,000 after retreating from a brief move above $87,000. According to analytics from Glassnode, this specific price range represents a massive concentration of long-term holder supply, creating a "heavy supply zone" where investors are likely to sell as they return to breakeven or move into profit. To sustain its recovery and clear this hurdle, Bitcoin requires significant institutional buying to absorb the mounting selling pressure. With current ETF inflows representing only a fraction of the volume seen during the start of the month, the market's ability to reopen a path to higher valuations depends heavily on whether institutional appetite sees a renewed uptick in the coming sessions.
