Bitcoin Retreats Below $85,000 as Surging Treasury Yields Cool Crypto Rally
The cryptocurrency market faced a reality check this week as Bitcoin’s recent momentum stalled, sliding back below the $85,000 mark. The retreat comes on the heels of robust U.S. economic data, which sent Treasury yields climbing and forced investors to recalibrate their expectations for interest rate cuts.
Economic Strength Clouds the Rate Cut Horizon
The primary driver behind the sudden price correction was the S&P Global Flash U.S. Composite PMI, which jumped to 58.4 in September—its strongest reading in over five years. While strong business activity is typically a positive indicator, markets are currently viewing it through the lens of monetary policy. Faster growth, strong employment, and rising input prices give the Federal Reserve less incentive to lower interest rates, potentially keeping policy restrictive if inflation remains uncomfortably high.
The Return of the 5% Yield
In response to the economic data, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield surged above the critical 5% threshold. For risk assets like Bitcoin, higher yields create a significant hurdle; they increase the guaranteed returns available on conventional dollar assets and raise the discount rate for speculative investments. Although Bitcoin recently climbed above $87,000 following a squeeze on short positions, this latest pullback proves that the rally remains highly sensitive to macro liquidity and the ongoing debate over how long interest rates will stay elevated through the final quarter of 2026.
