Bitget Hack Drives September Crypto Losses to Record Highs
The cryptocurrency exchange Bitget recently fell victim to a massive security breach, with unauthorized transfers draining approximately $351.6 million from its hot and warm wallets. This major exploit has not only forced the platform to freeze withdrawals but has also pushed total cryptocurrency losses for September 2026 to a record-breaking high, making it the costliest month for digital asset thefts this year.
Emergency Measures and Fund Coverage
Following the detection of the breach on September 24, Bitget CEO Gracy Chen announced that the exchange immediately activated emergency response procedures. While the attackers managed to siphon off nearly $192 million across seven different assets—with Ethereum accounting for over 44% of the stolen funds—Bitget’s cold wallets and the majority of platform assets remained unaffected. To reassure its user base, the exchange confirmed that all customer balances remain accurate and that the total loss is fully covered by Bitget’s $464 million User Protection Fund.
A Historic Month for Digital Asset Thefts
This incident serves as a significant blow to the industry's security landscape, as it pushes the total reported crypto thefts for September past the $684 million mark. This figure surpasses the previous 2026 record of $646.9 million set in April, which was dominated by the Drift and KelpDAO attacks. As Bitget works with law enforcement and on-chain security firms to identify the attack vector, the exchange remains focused on completing a full security review before restoring withdrawal services for its users.
