Understanding the Maturity Risks of Coinbase’s Fixed-Rate Bitcoin Loans

Coinbase has expanded its lending suite by introducing fixed-rate Bitcoin-backed USDC loans, powered by the Morpho Midnight protocol. While these loans offer borrowers the advantage of predictable interest rates and set repayment schedules, they also introduce a novel risk factor: time-based liquidation. Unlike traditional crypto loans that fluctuate based on market volatility, these fixed-term products can put healthy collateral at risk simply by passing a calendar deadline.

Liquidation Beyond Market Volatility

In a standard variable-rate loan, liquidation is typically triggered only when the value of the collateral drops below a certain threshold. However, Coinbase’s fixed-rate loans introduce a dual-trigger system. While a drop in Bitcoin’s price can still lead to a health-based liquidation, the maturity date acts as a second, independent trigger. If the debt remains unpaid once the loan reaches its expiration date, the position becomes eligible for liquidation regardless of how "healthy" the collateral-to-value ratio is. This means a liquidator can seize the collateral even if the Bitcoin price has remained perfectly stable or has increased.

The Trade-off Between Predictability and Flexibility

The primary appeal of these loans is the certainty of cost; Coinbase displays an indicative rate and locks in the final interest amount at the moment of confirmation. However, this predictability comes with rigid terms. Borrowers cannot reduce their interest burden by paying early, nor can they convert an existing loan between fixed and variable rates. To help users manage this strict deadline, Coinbase issues multiple reminders at the seven-day, three-day, and 24-hour marks. Despite these warnings, the burden remains on the borrower to ensure full repayment by the deadline to prevent a "healthy" position from being liquidated under Morpho’s post-maturity rules.

Availability and Protocol Integration

These fixed-rate offerings sit alongside Coinbase’s existing variable-rate loans, which do not have set due dates. Currently, the service is available to verified US customers (excluding New York) and offers limited access to users in the United Kingdom. By utilizing the Morpho protocol, Coinbase is providing a more structured financial product for the crypto market, but it requires a shift in borrower behavior—moving from monitoring price charts alone to strictly adhering to contractual maturity dates.
