MoonPay Expands Into Private Securities with North Capital Acquisition
MoonPay has officially signed a definitive agreement to acquire North Capital Investment Technology, a move that signals a significant expansion into the regulated private securities market. By bringing an established trading venue into its ecosystem, the crypto payments leader aims to bridge the gap between traditional finance and digital assets. The deal represents a strategic pivot toward offering more sophisticated financial services beyond simple cryptocurrency transactions.
Integrating Regulated Infrastructure
The acquisition provides MoonPay with North Capital’s comprehensive suite of technology and regulated services, ranging from investor onboarding to transaction processing. A key asset in this transaction is North Capital’s subsidiary, a registered broker-dealer that operates an Alternative Trading System known as PPEX. This platform allows for the secondary trading of exempt securities, including tokenized assets, outside of traditional stock exchanges. By integrating this infrastructure, MoonPay gains the capability to facilitate the movement of money between conventional assets and digital, blockchain-based securities.
Navigating the Path to Completion
While both boards have approved the merger, the deal is currently pending regulatory clearance and the fulfillment of other closing conditions. At this stage, MoonPay has not disclosed the purchase price or a firm date for when the acquisition will be finalized. For existing customers, the announcement does not yet grant access to new trading features or define eligibility rules for private securities. Once the deal closes, North Capital will become a wholly owned subsidiary, setting the stage for a new interface that combines regulated securities trading with MoonPay’s digital asset tools.
