Symbiosis Protocol Navigates Bitcoin Bridge Exploit and Fund Recovery

The cross-chain liquidity protocol Symbiosis is currently managing the fallout from a security breach targeting its native Bitcoin Bridge on September 11. While the protocol has successfully recovered approximately 15 BTC and secured the funds in a multisig wallet, liquidity providers are still awaiting definitive compensation terms and a full accounting of the total losses incurred during the incident.

The Breach and Technical Response

The vulnerability was exploited in the Symbiosis BridgeV2 system, where an attacker managed to mint a massive amount of synthetic bitcoin (syBTC) on the BNB Chain. According to security reports, the attacker realized at least $336,000 by converting stolen assets into Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) on the Ethereum network. In response, Symbiosis immediately paused its native Bitcoin Bridge to prevent further unauthorized activity, though it clarified that its other routes—including those on EVM chains, TRON, and TON—remained fully operational and secure throughout the event.

Recovery Efforts and Liquidity Provider Status

In an effort to reclaim the remaining assets, Symbiosis offered a 20% white-hat bounty to the attacker, with a deadline of September 13 before extending the offer to the public for information leading to a recovery. While the protocol has restored Bitcoin swap functionality by routing transactions through third-party partners like THORChain and Chainflip, the native bridge remains offline pending further updates. Affected liquidity providers have been contacted directly, but the protocol has yet to disclose the specific criteria for compensation or the timeline for when these users can expect to be made whole.
