Osmosis Confronts Backing Shortfall Following Nomic Bridge Vulnerability
Osmosis has moved to freeze 22.65 BTC after a critical flaw in Nomic’s forwarding logic allowed for the creation of "false vouchers," leaving the platform’s allBTC asset significantly under-collateralized. The exploit, which stems from a double-spend vulnerability within the Nomic bridge system, has compromised approximately 36.03% of the backing for allBTC, forcing a total pause on minting and redemptions as the community weighs its recovery options.
Technical Failure and the Backing Gap
The issue originated within Nomic’s custom forwarding system rather than the Osmosis chain or the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol itself. This specific logic error enabled the minting of invalid nBTC—a constituent asset of the allBTC basket—resulting in a shortfall where the circulating supply of allBTC exceeds the valid Bitcoin reserves held in the basket. On-chain researchers traced the activity back to late June, noting that while 22.65 BTC remains frozen and unmoved, the total impairment to the basket stands at roughly 39.84 BTC.
Governance and the Road to Recapitalization
With the allBTC dashboard showing the asset is only partially backed, the responsibility for restoration now lies with Osmosis governance. The current recovery plan involves a two-step process: first, a formal proposal to confiscate the 22.65 BTC currently frozen on-chain, and second, utilizing the Osmosis community pool to provide the remaining 17.19 BTC needed to reach full parity. Until these measures are approved and executed, allBTC holders remain in a state of limbo, unable to exit their positions through official channels.
Current Status of Operations
As of the latest reports, all inflows and outflows related to Nomic and allBTC remain restricted to prevent further volatility or exploitation. While a subDAO has the power to pause the pool, the final recapitalization requires a significant consensus within the governance framework. For now, the "haircut" for holders remains unrealized, but the path to full redemption depends entirely on whether the community agrees to bridge the multi-million dollar gap using collective reserves.
