Moonwell Navigates Recovery with Major Interest Rate Overhaul
Moonwell, a prominent lending protocol, has initiated a series of strategic governance measures to address the aftermath of the recent MAMO market incident on the Base network. By introducing governance proposal MIP-X66, the protocol seeks to stabilize its financial position and manage the significant bad debt accumulated during the late August exploit. The recovery plan focuses on aggressive interest rate adjustments and the utilization of protocol reserves to recapitalize the USDC market and restore ecosystem health.
Mitigating the Growth of Bad Debt
At the heart of the recovery plan is a proposal to slash the monthly interest accruing on outstanding bad debt by approximately 85%. According to projections from Anthias Labs, the current monthly interest of $338,785 is expected to drop to roughly $50,273 once the proposed changes to market risk settings and interest-rate models are implemented. While this move does not directly recover lost capital or forgive existing principal, it effectively slows the expansion of the debt burden on the protocol’s books, providing the necessary breathing room to pursue further recovery efforts.
Recapitalization Efforts and the Path to Liquidity
To bolster the USDC market, Moonwell intends to withdraw protocol-owned reserves from both the Base and OP Mainnet for conversion into liquidity. This recapitalization effort specifically targets protocol-held assets rather than user funds, aiming to stabilize the market without impacting current depositor balances. Despite these steps, the protocol faces ongoing challenges regarding withdrawal liquidity and the restoration of borrowing services. Management has clarified that reopening borrowing remains subject to future risk assessments, and the retention of security firm Zero Shadow indicates that the recovery of missing funds is still an active, multi-layered process.
