Paraguay recently solidified its position as a significant player in the global Bitcoin ecosystem by hosting "Acelerando Bitcoin," the country's first 100% Bitcoin conference. Over two days in September, Asunción welcomed more than 500 enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, and specialists worldwide, spotlighting Paraguay's unique advantages and ambitions in the cryptocurrency space, particularly regarding digital mining and technological development.
Paraguay: A Strategic Hub for Bitcoin Mining
The conference underscored Paraguay's burgeoning role as a prime location for Bitcoin mining, largely due to its abundant hydroelectric energy. Representatives from the National Electricity Administration (ANDE) and industry leaders highlighted a shift in perception, now viewing Bitcoin mining as a crucial driver for economic and energy development. With approximately 1 GW of power dedicated to the industry, contributing around 3.5% of the global Bitcoin hashrate, this activity generates substantial revenue, enabling further investments in the country's electrical infrastructure. Experts like Alejandro López from Penguin Group emphasized that the combination of clean energy and favorable tax policies makes Paraguay an unparalleled strategic location, exemplified by their data center at the Itaipú dam, which employs advanced immersion cooling and holds potential for AI projects.
Fostering Growth Through Education and Adoption
Beyond mining, a key focus of "Acelerando Bitcoin" was the crucial role of education and adoption in building a resilient Bitcoin ecosystem. Lorena Almada of JAN3 stressed that education is vital for transforming public perception of Bitcoin in Paraguay, noting the rise of local meetups, introductory workshops, and the potential for banks to integrate direct BTC buying and selling into their services. Nicole Cobelli of X4T added that cryptocurrencies are already woven into daily life, facilitating everything from remittances and import payments to real estate transactions. Furthermore, the event showcased initiatives like Penguin Academy's CodePro program, an innovative eight-month course designed to cultivate local tech talent, with a payment model tied to successful job placement, ensuring practical skill development and employability. Looking ahead, the conference founder, Bruno Vaccotti, expressed optimism for Paraguay's potential to double its participation in the Bitcoin network, viewing it not just as mining but as a pathway to economic sovereignty and national development.
