Firo Network Secures Private Transactions with Critical Hard Fork Upgrade

The Firo blockchain is undergoing a mandatory hard fork at block 1,371,000 to implement a permanent fix for a vulnerability within its Spark privacy protocol. This scheduled upgrade requires all network participants—including miners, exchange operators, and wallet users—to transition to version 0.14.18.0 to maintain compatibility with the network. By addressing a flaw discovered in August, the update ensures the long-term integrity of the privacy coin's supply while restoring full functionality to its shielded transaction system.

Resolving the Spark Protocol Vulnerability

The primary objective of this hard fork is to repair a significant flaw in the Spark protocol that specifically affected multi-input private transactions. Initially disclosed on August 13, the vulnerability theoretically allowed attackers to forge coins and inflate the total supply under specific conditions. While a controlled test by the discovering researcher generated 200 FIRO, the project confirmed that no external exploitation had been detected. To protect the network during the development of a permanent fix, Firo previously implemented a stopgap measure that restricted Spark spends to a single input, which maintained security but weakened user privacy by making transactions easier to correlate.

Restoring Privacy and Network Compatibility

The release of version 0.14.18.0 introduces a new Chaum V2 proof and an updated transaction format designed to eliminate the inflation risk permanently. Once the hard fork activates, updated wallets will automatically resume normal multi-input Spark spending, allowing users to regain the high level of privacy they expect from the platform. It is important to note that this transition does not require users to migrate or remint their existing Spark coins, as all balances and private keys remain valid across the fork. However, nodes and service providers who fail to upgrade will be left on an incompatible chain, making this a critical update for all active participants in the Firo ecosystem.
