Thailand Strengthens Crypto Oversight with New "Travel Rule"

Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has officially introduced a "Travel Rule" designed to enhance transparency within the digital asset sector. Set to take full effect on February 27, 2027, these regulations mandate that supervised cryptocurrency platforms collect and share detailed information regarding both the senders and recipients of coin transfers. This regulatory shift aligns Thailand with international standards for anti-money laundering and ensures that the identities behind digital transactions are clearly documented.

Data Requirements and Transaction Thresholds

The new framework establishes specific data collection protocols based on the value of the transaction. For all transfers, regardless of size, customers must identify the recipient when moving coins from a regulated platform. However, for transactions exceeding 30,000 baht, the requirements become more stringent, necessitating the disclosure of the recipient's city, province, and country of residence. In cases where the recipient is a legal entity, the customer must also provide a formal registration number. This information must be transmitted between the originating and receiving operators, and all related records must be archived for at least five years to facilitate regulatory audits.

Wallet Verification and Implementation Timeline

Beyond platform-to-platform transfers, the SEC is also addressing transactions involving self-hosted wallets to prevent anonymous illicit activity. For incoming transfers from private wallets that exceed the 30,000 baht threshold, platforms are required to verify that the user actually owns or controls the wallet before the funds can be moved. While these rules do not apply to standard order-book trades or Thai baht withdrawals, they represent a significant shift in how digital assets move through regulated channels. The SEC has provided a 180-day implementation period following publication in the Royal Gazette, giving operators until early 2027 to upgrade their systems and prepare for these enhanced compliance standards.
