Bitcoin ETFs Break Record Streak Amid Surging Altcoin Demand
After an impressive nine-day run of consistent growth, US-listed Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced a sharp reversal on August 28, recording a net outflow of $201.9 million. This shift occurred as Bitcoin’s price dipped roughly 3.2% to $77,696, interrupting what analysts described as the strongest buying streak of the current market cycle. While the broader weekly demand for Bitcoin remained positive, the sudden cooling suggests a brief pause in the heavy institutional momentum that has underpinned the asset's recent price recovery.
A Sudden Break in Institutional Momentum
The Friday sell-off was led by ARK 21Shares’ ARKB, which saw withdrawals of $114.9 million, followed by notable redemptions from Bitwise and BlackRock’s IBIT. Despite this one-day setback, the overall context remains substantial, as the preceding nine-session streak had absorbed over $3 billion in capital. Experts view this withdrawal as a relatively minor correction—erasing only about 6.6% of the recent nine-day haul—within a massive market that currently manages approximately $97 billion in total assets.
Altcoins Show Independent Resilience
In a notable divergence from the market leader, Ethereum, XRP, and Solana ETFs continued to attract significant capital even as Bitcoin faltered. Ethereum funds led this secondary charge with $102.1 million in inflows, extending their own buying streak to ten consecutive days, while XRP and Solana products also maintained their positive trajectories. This contrast suggests that institutional appetite for the wider crypto market remains robust and is becoming increasingly diversified. As markets reopen, the industry is watching to see if Bitcoin will quickly regain its support or if investors are beginning to distribute their capital more broadly across the digital asset landscape.
