BlackRock’s IBIT Options Reinstated on MIAX Following Regulatory Shift

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has successfully regained its short-term options expiries on the MIAX exchange group following a strategic regulatory overhaul. After briefly disappearing from the third-quarter roster due to stringent eligibility requirements, the ETF has been reinstated under a newly established "Tier 2" framework. This adjustment ensures that one of the market's most prominent Bitcoin investment vehicles remains accessible for sophisticated trading strategies throughout the week.

The Introduction of the Tier 2 Framework

The primary driver behind IBIT’s return is a significant change in the exchange's listing rules, which now differentiate between two distinct tiers of qualifying ETFs. Under the original Tier 1 requirements, funds were required to maintain over $50 billion in assets under management (AUM) and exceed 10 million monthly options sides to qualify for a full suite of short-term expiries. The new Tier 2 framework significantly lowers these barriers, requiring only $25 billion in AUM and 5 million monthly sides. While IBIT’s net assets sat at approximately $43 billion—failing the Tier 1 threshold but easily clearing the Tier 2 bar—the rule change allowed MIAX to restore the fund's Monday and Wednesday expiries without waiting for the next quarterly review.

Regulatory Approval and Market Impact

This restoration was made possible after the SEC waived the standard 30-day delay period, allowing the new rules to become operative immediately upon filing in mid-August 2026. Although the SEC retains the authority to suspend the rule within a 60-day window and has set a comment deadline for September 17, the change has already reopened vital short-term dates for traders on the MIAX Pearl exchange. While this development is specific to the MIAX venue and does not represent a market-wide shift in how IBIT options are handled across all exchanges, it provides essential flexibility and liquidity for investors looking to hedge positions or speculate on Bitcoin’s short-term price movements.
