Secret Network has officially entered a transformative era following the execution of a massive token mint designed to sustain the ecosystem. As the original developers at SCRT Labs prepare to withdraw their support on September 1, the network’s community has stepped in with a bold "community-continuance" plan to ensure the long-term survival and independence of this Cosmos-based layer 1 blockchain.
The Billion-SCRT Mint and Infrastructure Stability
On August 21, the network successfully implemented the v1.26.0 upgrade, which triggered a one-time mint of 1.079 billion SCRT. This move, mandated by the passage of Proposal 365, was a strategic necessity to keep the network operational ahead of the looming support cutoff. By integrating the mint directly into a block upgrade event, the community ensured that block production remained stable and that the software transitioned smoothly to a version capable of being maintained by independent validators and community backers rather than a centralized lab.
Economic Restructuring for Long-Term Development
The significant increase in token supply has fundamentally shifted the network's economic landscape, bringing the total supply to approximately 1.44 billion SCRT. While this move diluted the collective share of existing holders to about 25%, it provided the "continuity effort" with the necessary capital to fund future growth. The newly minted tokens have been strategically allocated to core development programs, foundation initiatives, ecosystem funds, and validator incentives. Additionally, the new economic model makes 308.4 million SCRT liquid immediately and sets a sustainable ongoing inflation rate of 5% to support builders and relayers.
Transitioning to Decentralized Governance
This shift follows the community’s rejection of a previous proposal that would have prioritized an Arbitrum-based snapshot, signaling a clear preference for maintaining the native Secret Network chain. With SCRT Labs concluding its technical support, the responsibility for development, infrastructure maintenance, and validator participation now rests entirely on the community. The success of this transition represents a high-stakes test of decentralized resilience, as the network attempts to prove that its new resource allocation can support a durable and self-sustaining ecosystem without its founding corporate entity.
