GMO Coin Prepares for Potential Bitcoin Service Suspensions Amid eCash Rollout
GMO Coin, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, is alerting users to possible service interruptions as the new Bitcoin-derived chain, eCash, approaches its initial snapshot. While the exchange monitors the technical risks associated with the fork, customers are facing a period of uncertainty regarding the availability of Bitcoin trading and transfers during this experimental phase.
A Multi-Stage Launch and Exchange Caution
The eCash project is moving toward a snapshot at Bitcoin block 963,648, which is anticipated to occur around August 23. This event marks the beginning of an "Alpha" phase intended to issue practice versions of a new asset called ECX. GMO Coin has indicated that it may suspend Bitcoin spot trading, leveraged FX services, and BTC deposits or withdrawals to safeguard against market instability. However, the exchange’s decision remains conditional; because the current stage is a practice rollout rather than the final mainnet launch, GMO has not yet finalized the start or end times for any potential service freeze.
Technical Vulnerabilities and Market Volatility
The warning from GMO Coin highlights several technical challenges inherent in the eCash launch. Specifically, the new chain shares identical address formats with Bitcoin, and its opt-in replay protection creates a significant risk of accidental transfer errors. Beyond technical conflicts, the exchange is wary of thin liquidity and high volatility, which could result in widened spreads or triggered margin calls for traders. As the eCash roadmap progresses through Alpha and Beta stages toward a final mainnet launch in late October, GMO Coin continues to evaluate whether the immediate risks necessitate a full pause of its Bitcoin-related operations.
