The Durability Test for Hyperliquid’s HYPE ETFs
After a blockbuster launch that saw over $161 million in inflows during their first month, Hyperliquid’s HYPE ETFs have hit a significant stumbling block. A prolonged twelve-session drought of fresh capital, paired with a sharp decline in the underlying token’s value, has shifted the market narrative from rapid growth to a critical test of investor resilience.
A Sustained Period of Capital Outflows
Between July 17 and August 3, 2026, the suite of HYPE ETFs recorded nearly $30 million in net outflows, marking a stark reversal from their early success. The Bitwise HYPE ETF (BHYP) bore the brunt of this retreat, accounting for $22.5 million of the total exits, while 21Shares (THYP) and Grayscale (HYPG) saw more modest declines. Despite this recent "flow crack," a substantial cushion remains from earlier activity, with cumulative reported flows across the category still sitting at approximately $283 million.
Market Volatility and the Staking Factor
The cooling interest in these ETFs coincides with a difficult period for the HYPE token itself, which saw its price slide by nearly 23% over a 30-day window. Unlike traditional ETFs, the asset value of these funds is influenced not only by share redemptions but also by the volatility of the underlying cryptocurrency and staking mechanics. Currently, a significant portion of the assets within these ETFs is staked—ranging from 70% in BHYP to over 94% in HYPG—meaning that staking rewards and price fluctuations continue to move the needle on total assets under management even when trading remains flat.
Navigating the Road Ahead
The current market environment represents the first major "durability test" for the Hyperliquid ecosystem since its inception. While authorized participants continue to manage share creations and redemptions to keep market prices aligned with net asset values, the lack of new inflows suggests a "wait-and-see" approach from institutional investors. The next series of trading sessions will be pivotal in determining whether this drought is a temporary correction or the beginning of a more permanent trend in the digital asset space.
