The extensive reorganization, the largest in Monero's history, began on Sunday and lasted for about 43 minutes. It was orchestrated by Qubic, an AI-focused Layer 1 blockchain and mining pool that had accumulated over 51% of Monero's hash rate. This wasn't Qubic's first such action, following a six-block reorganization just the previous month, highlighting a recurring vulnerability. The incident raised immediate concerns among experts, with some, like Vini Barbosa, temporarily ceasing to accept XMR payments due to doubts about the network's reliability. Paradoxically, amidst this critical security breach and a broader market downturn, Monero's native token (XMR) displayed remarkable resilience, surging over 7% just hours after the reorganization concluded.
The Decentralization Dilemma: Seeking Solutions
The repeated attacks underscore the inherent risks in proof-of-work blockchains when decentralization is compromised. One temporary solution being considered is the adoption of DNS checkpoints, where nodes would rely on trusted community DNS servers for block data.
