VanEck’s Bitcoin ETF Transitions to New Fee Structure

VanEck's Bitcoin ETF, trading under the ticker HODL, has reached the end of its promotional zero-sponsor-fee period as of July 31. This transition marks a pivotal shift for the fund, which successfully leveraged a fee waiver to build a net asset base of over $1.076 billion. As the waiver expires, the fund moves into a new phase of its lifecycle within the competitive spot-Bitcoin ETF market.

Understanding the New Fee Model

The original waiver was designed to cover the fund’s first $2.5 billion in assets or last until the end of July. With the deadline arriving before the asset threshold was fully met, VanEck is now implementing a 0.20% annual sponsor fee on all trust assets. For investors, this translates to a cost of approximately $20 per year for every $10,000 invested. This new rate positions HODL competitively, matching the expense ratio of the Bitwise Bitcoin ETF and sitting below the 0.25% fee charged by BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust.

Market Position and Future Outlook

Despite the shift away from zero fees, HODL remains a significant player in the digital asset landscape with cumulative net inflows totaling $1.146 billion. While the fund experienced some minor outflows in recent months, it attracted fresh capital on its final fee-free day, signaling continued investor interest. As the fund enters this new era, its success will depend on its ability to compete with low-cost leaders while benefiting from the broader price movements of Bitcoin. The 0.20% fee is now the standard recurring cost, though total ownership will still be influenced by brokerage commissions and market spreads.
