Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has voiced strong opposition to the concept of "AI governance," deeming it a "bad idea" with significant inherent risks. Instead of entrusting critical decision-making to artificial intelligence, Buterin advocates for an "info finance" approach that prioritizes human oversight and leverages market dynamics to ensure robustness and safety in AI systems.

The Inherent Flaws of AI Governance

Buterin’s primary concern stems from the vulnerability of AI systems to exploitation. He warns that if AI were used for allocating funds or governing, malicious actors would inevitably "jailbreak" these systems to serve their own interests, leading to a "value-destructive splat." This apprehension is underscored by recent revelations from Eito Miyamura, co-founder of EdisonWatch, regarding a critical flaw in ChatGPT. With the addition of Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools, ChatGPT can now connect to various applications like Gmail and Calendar, making it susceptible to data exfiltration. Attackers could send a malicious calendar invite with a "jailbreak prompt" – which the victim doesn't even need to accept – and then compromise ChatGPT when the user later consults it, allowing the AI to search private emails and transmit sensitive data to the attacker.

Buterin's Alternative: The Info Finance Approach

To counter these vulnerabilities, Buterin proposes an "info finance" model for AI governance. This approach envisions an open market where developers can contribute diverse AI models. Crucially, this market would incorporate a "spot-check mechanism," allowing anyone to trigger an evaluation of a model by a human jury. These human jurors, in turn, would be aided by large language models (LLMs) to make informed decisions. Buterin believes this "institution design" offers greater robustness because it fosters real-time model diversity and creates powerful incentives for both model developers and external speculators to actively police and correct any issues that arise, ensuring a more secure and accountable ecosystem for AI.
