The Peril of Setting a New Precedent
Michael Saylor has been particularly blunt in his criticism, asserting that there are "110 things more dangerous to Bitcoin than spam." His primary concern lies in the precedent that BIP 110 would set by turning a dispute over data types into a mandatory consensus change. By empowering the network to reject valid, fee-paying transactions based on their content, the proposal risks undermining the neutrality of the blockchain. Adam Back, a pioneer in cryptography, views BIP 110 as a direct violation of the cypherpunk ethos that defines Bitcoin. He emphasizes that a side effect of a truly decentralized system is the inability to impose one's personal views or "police" the transactions of others. According to Back, attempting to mandate specific user behavior at the protocol level is a technical and philosophical mistake that could lead to a network split or a "fork." He maintains that Bitcoin’s robustness relies on its resistance to outside manipulation and its commitment to remaining a permissionless platform, regardless of how individual users choose to utilize the block space.
