Wealth Managers Operating in the Dark: CoinShares Reveals Major UK Crypto Visibility Gap

A new report by digital asset investment firm CoinShares reveals a startling disconnect between UK wealth managers and their clients’ digital asset holdings. More than half of UK financial advisers are currently "blind" to a significant portion of their clients' cryptocurrency investments, creating a massive risk management vacuum in the traditional financial sector.

The Visibility Crisis in UK Wealth Management

The survey, titled The Silent Portfolio, polled 261 wealth management professionals and identified a massive oversight gap. According to the findings, 52% of UK-based advisers report that more than half of their clients' digital asset holdings sit entirely outside their professional view. While investors are increasingly purchasing Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins directly, their financial guardians are often left with an incomplete picture of total portfolio risk.

Structural Barriers and "Wrong-Way Risk"

CoinShares attributes this visibility gap to restrictive internal policies rather than a lack of interest from advisers. The data shows that 61% of wealth managers work at firms with either prohibited digital asset policies or no clear internal guidance. CoinShares CEO Jean-Marie Mognetti describes this as a "wrong-way risk," where advisers are structurally prevented from managing volatility, liquidity, and tax planning for assets their clients already own. In contrast, advisers at firms with supportive crypto frameworks reported significantly smaller visibility gaps.

The Demand for Regulated Access

The industry is now signaling a clear desire for more familiar, regulated pathways to close this oversight chasm. Nearly 45% of surveyed professionals cited formal regulatory recognition as the primary driver for confidence, while 43% highlighted a need for better access to Exchange Traded Products (ETPs). By integrating crypto holdings into regulated channels, wealth management firms can finally monitor concentration levels and integrate digital assets into a comprehensive financial strategy.
