The Return of Gram: Toncoin Rebrands to Reclaim Its Original Identity

The Open Network (TON) has officially sanctioned a major rebranding of its native token, Toncoin, back to its original name, Gram (GRAM). This transition, approved by an 81.22% majority vote, marks a strategic effort to reconnect the blockchain with its initial vision and deepen its integration with the Telegram ecosystem.

A Phased Transition to the Original Token Identity

Beginning June 15, 2026, the native token of The Open Network will officially shed the Toncoin moniker in favor of Gram. While the blockchain’s name remains unchanged, the new ticker and logo will be rolled out across exchanges and wallets in a phased approach starting as early as June 9. Importantly, the community has clarified that this is a branding update only; users do not need to perform any token swaps, migrations, or technical claims to maintain their holdings. To prevent confusion and protect against potential fraud, platforms will temporarily display the asset as “Gram [prev. Toncoin]” during a three-month transition window.

Strengthening the Bond with Telegram

The rebrand is a central component of the “MTONGA” (Make TON Great Again) initiative, which positions Telegram as the primary driving force behind the network’s development. As the largest validator on the network, Telegram has already facilitated massive technical upgrades, including a tenfold increase in throughput and significantly lower transaction fees. By returning to the name used in the original white paper before regulatory hurdles in 2020, the project reinforces its status as the protocol-level infrastructure for the messaging platform. This move shifts the focus toward a performance-driven roadmap that is now more closely aligned with Telegram's global infrastructure ambitions than ever before.
