The funds belonged to HongCoin, an Ethereum-based project that failed to reach its fundraising goals in 2016. While investors were entitled to automatic refunds, a critical defect in the smart contract's refund mechanism prevented the capital from being returned. This flaw effectively trapped approximately $2 million worth of Ethereum in digital limbo for nine years, leaving investors with no way to access their original contributions.

The White-Hat Intervention

The breakthrough occurred when researcher Florent identified an "integer overflow" vulnerability within the contract’s administrator function. This specific type of bug, common in early blockchain development, allowed numerical values to wrap around and bypass the flawed refund conditions. By carefully crafting a specific input to reset holder balances, Florent was able to regain access to the refund process without misappropriating any assets. Working alongside the HongCoin team, the researcher facilitated 41 on-chain transactions to successfully unlock the trapped assets.

This recovery marks a significant victory for the 48 original investors who can now finally reclaim their funds. This case serves as a rare example of a security vulnerability being utilized for a purely beneficial purpose rather than a malicious exploit.
