Redefining the Ethereum Foundation: Vitalik Buterin’s Vision for Longevity

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed a strategic pivot for the Ethereum Foundation (EF), moving away from broad expansion toward a more focused, long-term mission. By prioritizing "longevity over breadth," Buterin aims to address recent criticisms regarding the foundation's transparency and its role within the ecosystem following a series of high-profile departures.

Prioritizing the "CROPS" Dimension

The core of this new strategy revolves around the "CROPS" framework, which focuses on five critical pillars: censorship resistance, resilience, openness, privacy, and security. Buterin argues that the EF should not attempt to compete with high-throughput chains on speed alone, but should instead double down on becoming the world’s most dependable and secure blockchain. By utilizing AI-powered tools to eliminate bugs and ensuring the network can function without centralized control during outages, the foundation seeks to solidify Ethereum’s reputation as a "sanctuary technology."

A Supporting Node, Not a Central Authority

Crucial to this transition is the reframing of the Ethereum Foundation’s role from a central authority to a single "supporting node" within a wider decentralized network. Buterin highlighted that the EF holds only 0.16% of the total ETH supply—significantly less than the 10% to 50% typically held by central foundations in other projects—reinforcing the idea that the EF was never designed to be an eternal steward. Under the guidance of interim co-executive director Bastian Aue, the foundation is set to become a "smaller, more opinionated ship," narrowing its mandate to ensure the ecosystem remains open and resistant to capture.
