Beware the XRP Giveaway Scam: Ripple Exec Issues Urgent Warning
Ripple’s former Chief Technology Officer, David Schwartz, has issued a public alert following a surge in sophisticated scams targeting XRP Ledger users. The warning comes after reports of a user losing 6,000 XRP to a fraudulent scheme that promised to double their investment. Schwartz clarified that these "airdrops" and "giveaways" frequently appearing on social media are entirely fake.
The Anatomy of the Attack
The scam often utilizes unsolicited NFTs sent directly to user wallets, carrying misleading memos such as "Verification: Safe XRPL verify message." These NFTs are paired with hidden "Buy Offers" that, once signed or accepted by the user, allow scammers to immediately drain XRP and other assets from the wallet. Fraudsters are also creating highly convincing fake profiles to impersonate industry leaders like Schwartz and Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse.
How to Stay Safe
Schwartz and blockchain security teams emphasize that no legitimate organization will ever host "surprise" giveaways that require users to send funds, share private keys, or reveal seed phrases. To protect your digital assets, experts recommend:
- Refusing to connect wallets to unverified or suspicious websites.
- Ignoring unsolicited NFT offers and canceling unknown pending transactions.
- Following only verified official accounts for corporate communications.
- Reporting impersonation accounts on social platforms like Instagram and Telegram.
