Urgency for a Moratorium on Crypto Donations
A cross-party parliamentary committee in the UK has called for an immediate moratorium on cryptocurrency donations to political parties. In a recent report, the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy emphasized that such donations pose an "unnecessary and unacceptably high risk" to the integrity of the political finance system and public trust. The committee argues there is no democratic imperative to permit crypto in political funding until robust safeguards are established, aiming to protect against foreign state threats and undue influence on critical UK policy positions, including relations with the US, EU, and Ukraine. This recommendation comes amidst growing scrutiny, especially after Nigel Farage’s Reform UK began accepting significant crypto donations, raising further questions about transparency.
Enhancing Transparency and Accountability
To mitigate these identified risks, the committee has outlined several crucial measures. They propose amending the Popular Representation Bill to enforce the moratorium until the Electoral Commission can provide statutory guidance. Further recommendations include the creation of a dedicated Political Finance Enforcement Unit, a significant reduction in the political donation declaration threshold from £11,180 to a mere £500, and an increase in maximum prison sentences for foreign financing irregularities to three years. These concerns are not unique to the UK, with jurisdictions like Ireland already prohibiting crypto political donations due to similar worries about foreign interference. Leading Labour MPs and the committee chair have also voiced alarms about cryptocurrencies' potential to obscure fund sources, facilitate untraceable micro-donations, and expose UK politics to external manipulation.
