Pioneering Space Mining
CEO Philip Johnston announced Starcloud's ambitious target to commence Bitcoin (BTC) mining by the end of 2026, utilizing its proprietary orbital data centers. The company plans to deploy energy-efficient ASIC devices for this endeavor, which Johnston highlights are approximately 30 times cheaper per kilowatt-hour to operate than traditional GPUs. This significant cost advantage, exemplified by a $1000 1kW ASIC versus a $30,000 1kW B200 chip, underpins Starcloud's belief that space mining will evolve into a "mass industry," alleviating the immense energy burden of terrestrial operations. Johnston predicts a future where much of the 20 GW continuously consumed by Bitcoin mining on Earth will migrate beyond our planet.
Orbital Infrastructure and Sustainable Power
Founded in early 2024, Starcloud's primary mission extends beyond just cryptocurrency to developing robust data centers in space, specifically to address the escalating energy needs of artificial intelligence. The company has already demonstrated its capabilities, having successfully launched a satellite with an NVIDIA H100 GPU into orbit in November – a landmark achievement for powerful GPU deployment in space. Looking ahead, Starcloud plans to launch a second spacecraft this year as it builds towards a formidable network of approximately 88,000 satellites. These extensive orbital data centers will primarily harness solar energy, ensuring a sustainable and cost-effective operational model for both AI computations and the pioneering venture of space-based Bitcoin mining.
