The Case for "Ossification"
Buterin's central thesis, encapsulated in his "walkaway test," posits that Ethereum's foundational layer should be robust enough to function reliably and securely even if its core maintainers were to disappear. This standard is designed to make the protocol behave more like a durable tool – akin to a purchased hammer – rather than a service reliant on continuous vendor support. Historically defined by major, coordinated upgrades, this call for stability represents a significant cultural pivot, moving away from constant reinvention towards an architecture capable of self-sustainability. This push can be understood as "Bitcoin-ification" in spirit, borrowing Bitcoin's most potent institutional asset: credibility derived from minimal rule-change risk.
