Understanding the Security Breach
Between December 24th and 26th, a malicious JavaScript code was stealthily injected into Trust Wallet's v2.68 Google Chrome plugin release. This insidious attack allowed thieves to intercept seed phrases from users who logged in during this critical window, resulting in an estimated $7 million in stolen funds. While investigations are ongoing into how the attackers managed to compromise the plugin's release mechanism, initial suspicions point towards a potential leak of API keys crucial for publishing updates to Google Chrome's marketplace.
Trust Wallet's Reimbursement Program and User Safeguards
To mitigate the impact on its users, Trust Wallet has initiated a dedicated reimbursement program. Affected individuals can apply for compensation through an official, purpose-made domain, ensuring a streamlined process with minimal required details. Applicants will need to provide their email addresses, the compromised wallet addresses, the hacker's addresses, and the relevant wallet-draining transaction hashes. Users are also advised to create a new wallet specifically for receiving compensation and to specify this new address, along with the current reimbursement sum, in their request. Crucially, Trust Wallet emphasizes vigilance against impersonation scams; the legitimate compensation program will never ask for passwords, personal data, or seed phrases.
