Synthetix (formerly Havven) (SNX) is a decentralized derivatives-liquidity protocol originally launched in 2017 as Havven before rebranding to Synthetix. It operates mainnet-native on Ethereum, with bridged or deployed instances also on Optimism, Base, Polygon, Avalanche, Fantom, Energi, Harmony, Huobi ECO Chain, NEAR, and a Wormhole-wrapped version on Solana. The protocol lets participants mint synthetic assets and supply pooled collateral that backs on-chain perpetual futures and other derivatives trading. SNX is the protocol's native token, central to its staking and collateral mechanics. As of 2026-09-02, SNX trades at roughly $0.21.
Synthetix differentiates itself by having stakers directly collateralize a shared debt pool that backs synthetic assets and on-chain perpetual futures, rather than offering one standalone product. This ties SNX's value to the derivatives-liquidity function itself: stakers underwrite the system's risk and are compensated from protocol activity generated across it. The model has since extended to Synthetix Perps trading, broadening where the pooled-collateral mechanism is actually used across the protocol's multiple chain deployments.
SNX functions as both a utility and governance token. Holders stake SNX as collateral to mint synthetic assets, and in return earn a share of protocol trading fees plus staking rewards, making staked SNX the collateral backbone of the system's debt pool.
Staked SNX also carries a governance role: it underlies participation in Synthetix Improvement Proposal (SIP) voting conducted through the Spartan Council, the protocol's governance body. SNX additionally collateralized the now-retired sUSD stablecoin.
Synthetix's supply is uncapped, with no fixed maximum. As of 2026-09-02, total and circulating supply are approximately 581,404,223 SNX, up from roughly 344 million previously.
An initial 2019-2023 weekly-decreasing inflation schedule was halted by governance near 344 million SNX. Supply then rose again via a 2026 governance-approved mint of roughly 160 million new SNX, issued to compensate sUSD holders at a 4:1 ratio, locked one year and vesting over a further year — a net inflationary event.
Synthetix launched as Havven, holding an ICO from February 28 to March 7, 2018 that raised $30,000,000 by selling 100,000,000 HAV tokens. HAV was later renamed SNX when the project rebranded to Synthetix. Reported initial allocation was 60% to token-sale investors, 20% to team and advisors, 12% to a foundation, 5% to partnerships, and 3% to bounties and marketing.
The project was founded in 2017, a year before the ICO, and the current Ethereum SNX contract was deployed later still, on 2019-08-09, alongside the Havven-to-Synthetix rebrand.
SNX is deployed mainnet-native on Ethereum, secured by Ethereum's proof-of-stake consensus. It is also deployed or bridged to Optimism, Base, Polygon, Avalanche, Fantom, Energi, Harmony, Huobi ECO Chain, and NEAR, plus a Wormhole-wrapped version on Solana. Optimism and Base are Ethereum rollups that inherit its consensus security; the other networks run their own independent validator sets and consensus mechanisms. Synthetix does not operate its own blockchain or validator set.
Synthetix was founded by Kain Warwick, who co-authored the original 2017 Havven whitepaper with Samuel Brooks, Anton Jurisevic, and Michael Spain. Warwick later stepped back into a passive advisory role before publicly announcing an active return, in a post titled "An Old Dictator Appears," to address what he called a "directionless" project, and now holds an Advisory Seat on the Spartan Council.
Warwick separately founded Infinex, a related but organizationally distinct DeFi project.
Synthetix is maintained as a decentralized protocol rather than by a single corporate issuer, governed on-chain through its Spartan Council DAO. It originated as Havven, a named business entity, before rebranding to Synthetix following its 2018 token sale.
Ongoing development and community coordination run through official channels — synthetix.io, the Synthetixio/synthetix GitHub repository, and docs.synthetix.io — rather than a conventional company structure.
Synthetix is governed on-chain by the Spartan Council, a seven-member DAO body that votes on Synthetix Improvement Proposals (SIPs) requiring roughly a 4-of-7 majority to pass. Kain Warwick holds an Advisory Seat and has also run for an elected seat.
In its most consequential recent action, the Council passed SIP-423, voting to freeze and retire the legacy sUSD stablecoin and compensate holders in newly vested SNX.
Following SIP-423's passage, Synthetix is executing the sUSD retirement: compensation SNX issued to former sUSD holders is locked for one year and then vests over a further year. Kain Warwick's active return to Spartan Council leadership, announced to redirect the project, is an ongoing 2026 priority.
Separately, South Korea's Upbit confirmed it will end SNX trading support on September 28, 2026, following an August 7, 2026 delisting review joined by Bithumb and Coinone over governance and tokenomics concerns.
Synthetix contracts have been audited across multiple phases by Iosiro, OpenZeppelin, Macro, Omniscia, and 0xCommit; no CertiK-conducted audit has been identified. An active Immunefi bug bounty pays up to $100,000 for critical smart-contract vulnerabilities and up to $30,000 for critical web/app vulnerabilities.
