The Sandbox (SAND) is the native token of The Sandbox, a blockchain-based virtual world running on Ethereum (ERC-20). Built on the earlier Pixowl mobile game, it relaunched in 2018 as a metaverse platform where users create, own, and monetize gaming experiences using voxel-based assets and virtual land parcels (LAND) represented as NFTs.
SAND functions as the platform's in-world currency and coordination token, used for transactions, governance, and staking within The Sandbox ecosystem. As of 2026-08-31, SAND traded around $0.038 with a market capitalization of approximately $110-112 million.
The Sandbox differentiates itself from other metaverse and gaming tokens by combining NFT-based ownership of virtual LAND with direct DAO governance participation for holders.
Rather than functioning purely as a tradable asset, SAND is embedded in a creator economy where user-built games, assets, and land sales generate on-chain activity. The token captures this activity by serving as the required medium for governance participation, marketplace transactions, and staking rewards, tying its utility directly to platform usage.
SAND functions as both a utility and governance token.
SAND's public ICO concluded August 13, 2020, raising approximately $3,000,000 at an initial price of $0.00833 per token. The Ethereum contract was deployed October 29, 2019, predating both the ICO and the 2018 Animoca Brands acquisition that relaunched the project as a blockchain metaverse.
A $93 million Series B round followed in November 2021, led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2 (SoftBank's first crypto-asset investment), with Animoca Brands and Galaxy Interactive among other participants. Cumulative funding across the project's history totals approximately $300 million.
SAND is deployed as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, which uses Proof-of-Stake consensus.
Bridged or mapped implementations of the token also exist on other networks, including Polygon, Base, Harmony, and Energi, with the Ethereum contract serving as the canonical deployment.
The Sandbox originated as Pixowl, a mobile game founded in May 2011 by Arthur Madrid and Sébastien Borget together with game designer Adrien Duermaël.
Animoca Brands acquired Pixowl in 2018 to relaunch it as a blockchain metaverse. In August 2025, both co-founders stepped back from operational roles — Borget became a public ambassador and Madrid non-executive chairman — with Robby Yung, CEO of parent company Animoca Brands, taking over as The Sandbox's CEO.
The Sandbox is operated under the corporate umbrella of Animoca Brands, which acquired the project in 2018.
Following an August 2025 leadership overhaul, Animoca Brands' own CEO, Robby Yung, directly leads The Sandbox, with Animoca reported to hold full operational control. Animoca has been reported to be positioning The Sandbox's crypto treasury, estimated at $100-300 million, toward a possible future Hong Kong IPO, alongside a broader pivot from metaverse gaming toward additional Web3 products.
The Sandbox is governed through a DAO whose Phase One launched May 28, 2024, seeded with a 25 million SAND treasury.
SAND holders and virtual LAND owners vote on Sandbox Improvement Proposals (SIPs) covering treasury management, asset and game rewards, and charity grants; a minimum of 5 SAND is required to vote. A Council reviews SIPs and can veto proposals for legality, misalignment, or redundancy, meeting bi-monthly. Governance is rolling out in three phases, and The Sandbox's own staff continue managing some operations during the current phase.
The Sandbox underwent a major leadership overhaul in August 2025 and a cross-chain bridge exploit in August 2026, alongside a broader platform diversification.
The Sandbox's core SAND, LAND, and LANDSale contracts were audited by CertiK, which found no critical vulnerabilities; a second audit was conducted by Solidified.
In August 2026, an attacker exploited The Sandbox's cross-chain bridge infrastructure to mint unbacked SAND on Base and BNB Smart Chain; The Sandbox assessed the impact at under 0.01% of total supply and disabled transfers on both chains, while Ethereum and Polygon were unaffected. Holder concentration is high, with the top 10 holders controlling 64% of supply, and on-chain liquidity relative to market cap is thin.
