THORChain (RUNE) is a decentralized cross-chain liquidity protocol built on its own sovereign Layer-1 blockchain, enabling native swaps of assets between different blockchains without wrapped tokens or centralized custodians.
The chain uses a Cosmos-SDK architecture secured by Tendermint-BFT consensus (chain id thorchain-1). RUNE is the network's native gas, settlement, and security asset, used to pay transaction fees and to underpin economic security across the protocol's liquidity pools and validator nodes.
THORChain differentiates itself by enabling trustless, native-asset swaps across blockchains—including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and, since August 2026, privacy coins Monero and Zcash—without wrapped or bridged intermediaries.
A share of swap fees is used to buy RUNE, directly linking network usage to token demand, with a further portion burned outright. In Q1 2026 the protocol processed $2.82B in swap volume, generating $3.3M in swap fees and $1.9M in affiliate revenue; daily DEX volume was approximately $40.13M as of September 1, 2026.
RUNE functions as a utility asset serving as the chain's gas, settlement, and security token, rather than a traditional voting-share governance token.
Holders use RUNE to pay transaction fees, bond it as collateral when operating or supporting validator nodes (THORNodes), and pair it with other assets to provide liquidity in THORChain's swap pools. A portion of protocol swap fees is also used to buy back, and in part burn, RUNE.
Circulating supply is approximately 330,444,006 RUNE, against an estimated maximum supply near 354 million RUNE, as of 2026-08-31.
Net emission trends deflationary: a share of swap fees is used to buy RUNE, split roughly 75% to nodes/pools, 10% to TCY holders, 5% to a dev fund, 5% to marketing, and 5% burned outright.
THORChain originated as a project founded in 2018 at a Binance-hosted "Dexathon" hackathon, with RUNE's public distribution occurring via an Initial DEX Offering on Binance DEX in July 2019.
The IDO offered RUNE starting at $0.032 per token. The project was reportedly seeded with approximately $600,000 at its 2018 founding. A legacy pre-mainnet Ethereum ERC-20 version of RUNE was later swapped 1:1 for the native mainnet asset around the 2021 migration, meaning the chain's live launch postdates the 2018 founding and 2019 IDO.
THORChain runs on its own sovereign Layer-1 blockchain (chain id thorchain-1), built on the Cosmos-SDK and secured by Tendermint-BFT consensus, rather than existing as a token deployed on another chain.
Network security and block production are handled by a rotating, bonded set of validator nodes (THORNodes) that periodically "churn" in and out of the active set. RUNE is bonded by these nodes and paired within liquidity pools as part of the chain's economic security model.
THORChain was founded in 2018 by a deliberately pseudonymous core team at a Binance "Dexathon" hackathon.
One long-pseudonymous co-founder, known as "Leena," was revealed in 2024 as John-Paul Thorbjornsen, an Australian former Air Force aeronautical engineering student. Chad Barraford is a named co-founder who remains a public spokesperson. Day-to-day development is led by Nine Realms, a core team headed by Gavin McDermott with roughly nine core developers and about 40 wider community contributors.
THORChain has no single issuing company or foundation; it operates as a decentralized, node-operator-governed protocol maintained primarily by Nine Realms, a core development team led by Gavin McDermott.
A separate but allied team, Kujira, partners with THORChain to build Rujira, an application/DEX layer that issues its own token, RUJI, distinct from RUNE. As of August 2026, Rujira's app layer was reported paused pending a clear restart path, with sub-products such as RUJI Launchpad and bRUNE on hold.
THORChain is governed by its bonded validator nodes (THORNodes) rather than a token-holder DAO or corporate board, using a mechanism called Mimir for on-chain parameter voting.
Voting follows a one-node-one-vote model rather than stake-weighting; operational changes reportedly require a small number of validator votes, while economic-parameter changes require supermajority consensus of roughly two-thirds of validators. An earlier "admin mimir" override mechanism was removed, reflecting a design goal of minimizing centralized governance and discouraging validator collusion.
THORChain's "3.20" network upgrade shipped around August 25, 2026, adding native swap support for privacy coins Monero (XMR) and Zcash (ZEC) without wrapped intermediaries. The upgrade also re-enabled support for BNB, Solana, and Base.
Its allied Rujira app layer's 2026 roadmap includes RUJI Trade v1.2, RUJI Lending and Liquidations (audited via a Code4rena public competition), a planned BTC-backed stablecoin, and a "Redacted" privacy layer. As of August 2026, Rujira's app layer itself was reported paused pending a clear restart plan.
THORChain has a documented history of exploits and third-party audits. In July 2021, two related bugs in its Ethereum bridge (Bifrost) were exploited for roughly $7.6M combined, after which THORChain commissioned audits from Trail of Bits and Halborn and moved toward continuous auditing with Halborn.
Halborn has since published audits covering Rujira's Credit Accounts and RUJI Lending components. On May 15, 2026, a vulnerability in THORChain's GG20 threshold-signature library let an attacker drain $10.7M from one of five Asgard vaults; trading was halted for roughly five weeks before resuming.
