Ondo (ONDO) is the governance token of Ondo Finance, an Ethereum (ERC-20) protocol that tokenizes real-world assets such as US Treasuries and equities.
Ondo Finance's flagship products are OUSG, a tokenized short-term US Treasuries fund, and USDY, a US Dollar Yield token. The protocol also operates Flux Finance, a decentralized lending market, and Ondo Stocks, a platform for tokenized stocks and ETFs. The ONDO token contract was deployed on Ethereum on 2022-04-28.
Ondo differentiates itself by focusing on institutional-grade tokenization of real-world assets rather than purely crypto-native yield products.
As of 2026-08-30, Ondo Finance's RWA products hold roughly $3.54 billion in total value locked, and by August 25, 2026, its newer Ondo Stocks platform had independently surpassed $1 billion in TVL with over 150,000 holders across 440+ tokenized stocks and ETFs on Ethereum, Solana, and BNB Chain. ONDO holders govern the DAO overseeing this ecosystem, tying the token to strategic control of a large, growing RWA infrastructure rather than to a single product.
ONDO is primarily a governance token: holders vote on proposals within the Ondo DAO, which oversees Ondo Finance's ecosystem protocols, including the Flux Finance lending market.
Governance participation, rather than staking for network security or fee payment, is the token's core function. ONDO does not currently provide holders with direct revenue share or fee yield from Ondo Finance's products; its value accrues through governance rights and influence over the protocol's strategic direction rather than a cash-flow entitlement.
Ondo Finance was founded in January 2021; the ONDO token contract was deployed later, on 2022-04-28, and the token sale took place in mid-2022 with more than 18,000 participants.
Before the sale, Ondo Finance raised a $4 million seed round led by Pantera Capital (August 2021), with Genesis, Digital Currency Group, CMS Holdings, and CoinFund participating. A $20 million Series A followed in April 2022, co-led by Founders Fund and Pantera Capital, joined by Coinbase Ventures, GoldenTree, Wintermute, Steel Perlot, Tiger Global, and Flow Traders.
ONDO is deployed on Ethereum (ERC-20), a blockchain secured by proof-of-stake consensus, in which validators stake ETH to propose and attest to blocks.
Ondo Finance does not operate its own blockchain or validator set; its smart contracts, including OUSG, USDY, and Flux Finance, run entirely on Ethereum's existing infrastructure.
Ondo Finance was co-founded by Nathan Allman (CEO) and Pinku Surana (CTO), both former Goldman Sachs employees. Allman worked on Goldman's digital assets team and graduated from Brown University; Surana led Goldman's blockchain R&D team, holds a PhD from Northwestern University and a computer science degree from Purdue, and previously worked at Facebook.
Allman died unexpectedly at age 32; his death was announced on 2026-05-25. Ian De Bode, then President, was immediately appointed CEO.
Ondo Finance, a company, develops and maintains the protocol; ecosystem oversight also nominally rests with the Ondo DAO and an affiliated Ondo Foundation.
Ondo Finance's mission is bridging traditional finance and DeFi through real-world-asset tokenization; its products include OUSG, USDY, the Flux Finance lending protocol, and the Ondo Stocks platform. Ondo Finance has been led by CEO Ian De Bode since May 2026, following founder Nathan Allman's death; company-level control has since become the subject of an unresolved legal dispute.
ONDO token holders govern the Ondo DAO, which oversees ecosystem protocols including the Flux Finance lending market, through on-chain proposal voting; the token carries no direct fee or revenue entitlement.
Separate from this token governance, corporate control of Ondo Finance is in active, unresolved dispute as of 2026-08-31: Kathleen Allman, mother of late founder Nathan Allman, filed a Delaware Court of Chancery complaint on 2026-07-24 seeking to remove CEO Ian De Bode and assert board control through her son's estate. De Bode has called the claims meritless, citing continued support from lead investors and the Ondo Foundation.
Ondo's most concrete recent development is the growth of Ondo Stocks, its tokenized-equities platform, which surpassed $1 billion in TVL by August 25, 2026.
The platform has also grown to more than 150,000 unique holders across 440+ tokenized stocks and ETFs on Ethereum, Solana, and BNB Chain. On August 17, 2026, a single trader made a $2.3 million purchase of QQQon, Ondo's tokenized Invesco QQQ product, cited by Ondo as evidence of institutional-scale adoption. Tokenized stocks broadly have grown to roughly 15% of the RWA market (about $2.8 billion), with Ondo among the segment's leaders.
