Linea (LINEA) is the native token of Linea, a zkEVM Ethereum Layer-2 network built by Consensys to scale Ethereum transaction execution while maintaining bytecode-level compatibility. It is minted as an ERC-20 on Ethereum, with the identical contract address also deployed on Linea's own L2. The token launched for public trading on September 10, 2025, roughly six weeks after its underlying contract was deployed on July 30, 2025.
Linea differentiates itself through a no-VC token distribution, with no LINEA sold to venture investors or allocated to the core team at launch. The community airdrop and Ecosystem Fund control the entire non-Consensys token supply, and protocol governance sits with a multi-organization Consortium rather than a single company.
LINEA functions as an ecosystem and incentive token rather than a governance token: holders have no on-chain voting rights over protocol decisions. Its primary utility to date has been as a community airdrop reward distributed to early network users, rather than for staking, fee payment, or collateral. Protocol governance and Ecosystem Fund allocation are instead handled by the Linea Consortium and Linea Association rather than through token-holder voting.
Linea has a fixed maximum supply of 72 billion LINEA, reduced to approximately 71.6 billion through an ongoing buyback-and-burn. Circulating supply is approximately 24.5 billion as of 2026-09-03.
Net token supply growth is currently classified as high, driven by scheduled Ecosystem Fund unlocks; sequencer-fee-funded buybacks (20% burn ETH, 80% buy back and burn LINEA) partially offset this growth.
LINEA's token generation event and public trading launch occurred on September 10, 2025, roughly six weeks after its Ethereum contract was deployed on July 30, 2025. The token launched via a fully-unlocked community airdrop to eligible network users rather than through an ICO, IDO, or private token sale; no tokens were allocated to venture investors or the core team at launch. Early trading reportedly implied a fully diluted valuation of roughly $2.7 billion, well above the approximately $182 million fully diluted valuation recorded as of 2026-09-03.
Linea (LINEA) is deployed as a native ERC-20 on Ethereum, secured by Ethereum's proof-of-stake consensus; the identical contract address also exists on Linea's own Layer-2. Linea itself is a zkEVM rollup: a sequencer orders and executes transactions off-chain, and zero-knowledge validity proofs are submitted to Ethereum, so the network inherits Ethereum's consensus security rather than operating an independent validator set.
Linea was built within Consensys, the Ethereum infrastructure company founded by Joseph Lubin, an Ethereum co-founder. Nicolas Liochon, formerly Head of Applied Research at Consensys, is named as Linea's founder and technical lead. Declan Fox is reported to serve as Head of Linea at Consensys and Chair of the Board of the Linea Consortium, though this specific role has not been independently corroborated by an official team page. No other individual contributors or advisors are publicly documented.
Linea was developed and originally incubated by Consensys, an Ethereum infrastructure company founded by Joseph Lubin in 2014 that also built MetaMask and Infura. Consensys has raised more than $700 million across funding rounds from 2019 to 2022, including a $450 million Series D at a $7 billion valuation in March 2022. Day-to-day governance of the Linea network has since been transferred to the Linea Association, a Swiss non-profit established in November 2024 to progressively decentralize control. Consensys retains a 15% LINEA allocation, locked for five years, without token-based voting control.
Linea does not use token-holder voting; LINEA holders have no on-chain governance rights. Governance and the Ecosystem Fund are instead overseen by the Linea Consortium, a group of Ethereum-aligned organizations including Consensys, Eigen Labs, ENS Labs, SharpLink Gaming, and Status, with a stated mandate to admit further stewards over time. The Consortium is tasked with overseeing the Ecosystem Fund for at least ten years, timed to Ethereum's tenth anniversary. The Linea Association, a Swiss non-profit formed in November 2024, is the formal legal entity governing the protocol.
In 2026, Linea completed an upgrade to a full Type-1 zkEVM, achieving bytecode-level equivalence with Ethereum. The network introduced Linea Yield Boost, which auto-stakes bridged ETH through Lido V3 integration so users earn Ethereum-native yield without manual steps. In August 2026, Linea Consortium member SharpLink Gaming disclosed a $200 million ETH-stake commitment to Linea's restaking programs, part of a stated push to position Linea as an institutional on-ramp. Linea is reported to continue trailing larger Layer-2 networks such as Base and Arbitrum in TVL and activity.
Linea's zkEVM infrastructure has been reviewed by multiple named third-party auditors. Least Authority audited the zkEVM cryptography (final report dated November 26, 2024) and the Linea Limitless Prover (August 1, 2025). OpenZeppelin has conducted eight audits across L1/L2 infrastructure, identifying and resolving 152 issues, and Veridise has also audited Linea's zkVM components. CertiK's Skynet platform scores the project 81.97/100 (Grade A) but flags no active bug bounty program. Top-10 wallets hold approximately 99% of LINEA supply; this reflects the disclosed Ecosystem Fund and Consensys lockups rather than open-market whale accumulation.
