KuCoin Token (KCS) is the native token of the KuCoin cryptocurrency exchange ecosystem, originally issued in 2017 as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Since February 2022 it has also served as the native gas and utility token of KuCoin Community Chain (KCC), an EVM-compatible Layer-1 blockchain built by the KuCoin community, making KCS effectively multi-chain across Ethereum and KCC.
KuCoin itself is a global centralized cryptocurrency exchange operating since 2017, reporting over 22 million global investors and 524+ listed coins.
KCS's value proposition rests on KuCoin's quarterly buyback-and-burn program, which commits roughly 10% of net profit to repurchasing and permanently destroying KCS. This ties token scarcity to exchange profitability rather than protocol fee flows.
As of 2026-08-31, KCS trades near $7.02 with a market capitalization of roughly $961 million, and its dual utility across a centralized exchange and its own KCC chain distinguishes it from single-venue exchange tokens. Price sits about 57% below its October 2025 all-time high of $16.25.
KuCoin Token (KCS) functions as a utility token rather than a governance token for individual holders. On KuCoin Community Chain (KCC), KCS is the native token used to pay gas fees for transactions and smart contract execution, functioning analogously to ETH on Ethereum.
Max supply: 200,000,000 KCS (hard cap). Circulating supply: approximately 137,155,021 KCS as of 2026-08-31.
Net emission is deflationary: KuCoin conducts quarterly buyback-and-burns funded by roughly 10% of net profit, with a long-term target of reducing supply to 100,000,000 KCS.
KuCoin held an initial coin offering (ICO) from August 13 to September 1, 2017, raising approximately $20 million for 100,000,000 KCS sold at 0.000055 BTC per token.
The canonical Ethereum contract used for KCS today shows a deployment date of January 12, 2021, several years after the original 2017 token sale, reflecting a later on-chain contract deployment rather than KCS's original launch. Its 200,000,000 hard-cap max supply was established alongside a long-term deflationary burn target.
KuCoin Token (KCS) originated as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum in 2017. Since February 2022, KCS has also served as the native gas and utility token of KuCoin Community Chain (KCC), an EVM-compatible Layer-1 blockchain built and operated by the KuCoin community rather than by Ethereum's own validator set.
KCS is therefore active across two chains: Ethereum, where it remains a standard ERC-20 asset, and KCC, its own independent EVM-compatible network.
KuCoin was founded in 2017 by Michael Gan (also referred to as Chun Gan), with Eric Don serving as co-founder and CTO. Additional co-founders cited include Top Lan, Kent Li, John Lee, Jack Zhu, and Linda Lin.
Following a March 2024 U.S. Department of Justice settlement, founders Chun Gan and Ke Tang agreed to step back from any management or operational role at KuCoin. BC Wong, previously KuCoin's Chief Legal Officer, became CEO in January 2025.
KuCoin, the global cryptocurrency exchange behind KCS, is operated by PEKEN Global Limited, the entity identified in U.S. Department of Justice filings. KuCoin is registered in Seychelles, with KuCoin describing its operational headquarters as Singapore.
The exchange also operates a MiCA-licensed European Union entity, KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH, based in Vienna, Austria.
KCS and KCC governance is formally overseen by the KCS Management Foundation. The Foundation brings together KuCoin's core team, the KCC GoDAO Foundation, investment institutions, angel investors, and representatives of the KCS holder community.
KuCoin has stated a long-term plan to transition governance to a fully autonomous, community-run structure called GoDAO. As of 2026-08-31, no evidence indicates this transition to full community control is complete.
BC Wong became CEO in January 2025 and has since launched a $2 billion Trust Project, a 2026-2028 plan to rebuild regulatory trust and strengthen compliance and security infrastructure. The plan was unveiled at TOKEN2049 Dubai.
This followed the February 2026 suspension of KuCoin's MiCA-licensed EU entity, KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH, by Austria's Financial Market Authority after the loss of required AML/sanctions compliance officers, underscoring compliance as a stated near-term priority.
KuCoin Community Chain (KCC) partnered with CertiK in December 2022 to streamline security auditing for projects on the chain. KuCoin separately publishes monthly Hacken-audited Proof of Reserves, with 32 consecutive months confirming reserves exceed liabilities.
In March 2024, KuCoin's operator, PEKEN Global Limited, pleaded guilty to U.S. federal charges of unlicensed money transmission and AML/KYC failures, paying $297 million in penalties. On the Ethereum contract, the top 10 wallets hold 97% of tracked supply, a concentration likely reflecting team/foundation lock-ups rather than open-market whale accumulation.
