Holo (HoloToken) (HOT) is an Ethereum ERC-20 token, issued as an "IOU" during Holo's 2018 token sale, redeemable 1:1 for HoloFuel. HoloFuel is the native currency of the Holochain distributed cloud-hosting network, and redemption is intended to occur once that network completes its mainnet migration.
The token's Ethereum contract was deployed on 2018-02-01. Bridged copies of the same token also exist on Base, Harmony Shard 0, Energi, and Arbitrum, though trading activity is concentrated on the original Ethereum contract.
Holo operates a distributed cloud-hosting network in which hosts are intended to be paid in HoloFuel for providing compute and storage services.
HOT functions as a claim on this future hosting economy for early backers: it is designed to convert 1:1 into HoloFuel once mainnet migration completes. A technical migration test between HOT and HoloFuel was conducted in April-May 2026, though the hosting economy itself had not launched on mainnet as of 2026-09-02.
HOT is a utility token, not a governance token: it carries no on-chain voting rights and functions instead as a redeemable claim on HoloFuel.
Holders currently have no functional use for HOT beyond holding or trading it on secondary markets, since Holo's hosting economy has not launched on mainnet. Once migration completes, HOT is intended to convert 1:1 into HoloFuel, the currency hosts will use to charge for, and be paid for, compute and storage services on the Holo network.
Total supply stands at approximately 177.6 billion HOT, with circulating supply equal to total supply as of 2026-09-02, giving a fully diluted valuation matching market capitalization at roughly $66.1 million.
Holo launched via a public token sale (ICO) held from 2018-03-29 to 2018-04-28, raising $20,389,000 at a price of $0.0006 per HOT.
The Ethereum contract underlying HOT was deployed on 2018-02-01, roughly two months before the public sale opened. At the sale's start, 25 billion HOT were released; by its close, approximately 133.2 billion HOT had been minted, with about 75% allocated to public sale participants and the remaining 25% reserved for the team and company.
HOT is an ERC-20 token issued on the Ethereum blockchain rather than operating its own independent chain.
Holo/Holochain was co-founded by Eric Harris-Braun and Arthur Brock, who began collaborating in December 2016 under the MetaCurrency Project, an earlier effort building tools for a peer-to-peer economy.
Both founders have decades-long software backgrounds: Brock, Holochain's Chief Architect, has worked as a contract coder since 1984 with experience in alternative-currency system design; Harris-Braun has been a programmer since the 1980s and currently serves as Executive Director of the Holochain Foundation.
Holo is issued and operated by Holo Limited, a for-profit hosting-network company registered in Gibraltar (registration number 116305).
Holo Limited is wholly owned by the Holochain Foundation, a Gibraltar-based non-profit whose stated mission is to support the open-source Holochain protocol. The Foundation created Holo Limited as a revenue-generating business to fund that mission and build a community-oriented cloud-hosting service.
HOT carries no on-chain or token-weighted voting rights, and Holochain describes itself as "governance agnostic," leaving governance rules to individual communities built on top of it. Organizational control of the issuing entities rests with the Holochain Foundation and Holo Limited.
A HOT-to-HoloFuel technical migration test was successfully conducted between April and May 2026, a step toward converting HOT into Holochain's native currency.
As of 2026-09-02, this migration had not been confirmed complete.
CertiK audited Holo's smart contract, delivering a final report on 2021-09-26; remediation of identified findings stood at 99% complete as of the latest review.
