Ethena (ENA) is the governance token of Ethena, a synthetic-dollar protocol whose core product, USDe, is backed by delta-neutral crypto derivatives positions rather than fiat reserves. ENA runs natively on Ethereum (ERC-20), with its contract deployed 2024-03-05, and also exists as bridged instances on Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Scroll, Mantle, zkSync, and other Layer-2 networks. Ethena Labs develops the protocol, while the Ethena Foundation oversees its governance and treasury functions.
Ethena differentiates itself by generating stablecoin backing yield from delta-neutral derivatives positions instead of fiat or T-bill reserves, and by tying protocol revenue directly to the ENA token. As of 2026-08-31, the protocol holds approximately $4.49 billion in TVL backing its USDe/sUSDe synthetic dollars. The Ethena Foundation has proposed directing 95% of net protocol revenue to ENA buybacks once USDe-supply milestones are met, giving ENA holders a claim on protocol cash flow beyond governance voting alone.
ENA is primarily a governance token for the Ethena protocol, giving holders a voice in protocol decisions. A proposed fee switch would direct protocol revenue toward ENA buybacks, adding a value-accrual role alongside the token's governance function.
ENA has a maximum supply of 15 billion tokens, of which about 9.83 billion are in circulation as of 2026-08-31. Total-supply allocation: Core Contributors 30%, Ecosystem Development 28%, Investors 25%, Foundation 15%, Binance Launchpool 2%. From October 5, 2026, remaining original investor token unlocks will be released in one lump sum rather than monthly; team-token vesting is unaffected. With supply inflation measured as low and a fixed 15 billion cap, net emission is disinflationary as circulating supply approaches the max.
ENA launched via Binance Launchpool as its 50th project, with farming from March 30 to April 1, 2024, and trading beginning April 2, 2024. The Ethereum contract was deployed 2024-03-05, ahead of the public launch. Binance Launchpool distributed 300,000,000 ENA (2% of max supply); a separate community airdrop tied to a USDe-staking shard campaign distributed 750,000,000 ENA (5%). Prior funding included a $6M seed round (July 2023, led by Dragonfly Capital), a $14M strategic round (February 2024, $300M valuation), and a $100M private ENA sale (December 2024).
ENA is a native ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Ethena does not operate its own blockchain or validator set for ENA; the token is also bridged as wrapped instances onto Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Scroll, Mantle, zkSync, and other Layer-2 networks, with the Ethereum deployment remaining canonical.
Ethena was founded by Guy Young, who serves as CEO. Young spent roughly a decade in traditional finance across investment banking, hedge funds, and private equity, most recently at Cerberus Capital Management, before founding Ethena Labs. Key backers across funding rounds include Dragonfly Capital, Arthur Hayes (BitMEX co-founder, via Maelstrom), Franklin Templeton, Polychain, Pantera Capital, and F-Prime Capital.
Ethena is developed by Ethena Labs, while protocol governance and treasury functions run through the Ethena Foundation, a Cayman Islands foundation company. As of an August 27, 2026 report, Ethena Foundation and Ethena Labs reached an agreement-in-principle to assign substantially all protocol intellectual property and economic benefits to the Foundation/ecosystem rather than to Labs' equity holders, with a definitive framework agreement expected in October 2026, reorganizing the Labs/Foundation relationship.
ENA governance combines token-holder votes with delegated expert committees rather than full on-chain voting on every decision. A three-member Risk Committee is elected via a bi-annual governance vote; ENA holders with more than 1,000 ENA may nominate candidates, who must pass a confirmation vote and Ethena Foundation KYC/KYB screening before being seated. A proposed fee switch would direct 95% of net Foundation revenue to ENA buybacks, with 5% funding ecosystem growth, pending confirmation.
Ethena's near-term roadmap centers on a proposed fee switch and a formal reorganization of protocol ownership. A definitive framework agreement transferring protocol IP and economic benefits from Ethena Labs to the Foundation/ecosystem is expected in October 2026. On August 24, 2026, Ethena and FalconX launched a $1 billion secured institutional lending facility backing USDe reserves, and CME Group/CF Benchmarks began publishing three regional daily ENA reference-rate benchmarks (London, New York, Asia-Pacific).
Ethena's contracts have undergone multiple audits with no critical or high-severity issues reported. Auditors include Zellic, Spearbit, Quantstamp, Pashov Audit Group, Code4rena, Chaos Labs, and Cyfrin, covering v1/v2 contracts, ENA/LP and sENA staking, and the USDTB stablecoin between 2023 and 2024. A public bug bounty program with Immunefi is listed as forthcoming. Structural risk factors include high holder concentration (top 10 holders control 60% of supply) and thin on-chain liquidity relative to market cap.
